Some time ago I woke up to breaking news, the resplendent headline read: man rapes and kills 3 year old daughter. As the details unfolded, I learned that the cause of the man’s actions were that his daughter did not come to breakfast in timely manner, so he raped and killed her. Pitiful.

It would be unethical and unheard of for the government to have the ability to mandate our reproductive capabilities, but in that moment I thought to myself: wow. Some people should not be allowed to bare kids.

As a single young woman my opinion on parenting is often discredited and unsolicited due to lack of experience. To that end, there are many women who have never birthed a child but serve as better maternal figures than biological mothers.

Children have served as parents to their siblings, when there was a lack of parental guidance. Any parent whether seasoned or novice can attest to the fact that there are no instructions that come with parenting. The answers (on what to do) are driven by instinct.

People often isolate the perspective on parenting to just the infant stage but, in actuality a child’s parents build the foundation for their identity progressing into adulthood. Children are a product of their environment. If they witness toxic behavior they become dysfunctional. If they witness abuse: they become the abusive or the abused.

Children learn both consciously and unconsciously or not at all. Children emulate the behavior they see their parents displaying in multiple categories from communication style to social interaction. Parental figures condition them with beliefs on themselves and others. Without a variety of stimulation children fail to develop the necessary skills to function as an adult.

The questions must be asked: what will I teach my children? What will I show them? Let’s no longer raise children who have to recover from their childhood. In the end, one could be raising the next Hitler or Obama. Who will you unleash on society?
